Matthew Feng, Former Senior Associate, Financial Services Practice, Assurance, PwC China/Hong Kong
This interview was conducted in 2016 when Matthew Feng was serving in PwC China / Hong Kong.
Q : Why did you join the accounting firm?
A : My undergraduate degree was Accounting and then I took a master degree in Engineering Management. After graduation, I wanted to understand the world of accounting and professional services more and also get exposures in different sectors and corporations. With the clientele in PwC, I have had experience in banks, insurance and asset management companies which helped widen my vision a lot. I have also made many friends of my age and met some senior colleagues since I join the firm 3 years ago.
During the first two years, we have to enhance our technical capabilities as quickly as possible and that includes learning more accounting knowledge and standards. The firm provides many top-up trainings. After being promoted to senior associate, we need to respond to inquiries from clients, as well as communicate with internal partners and managers. We also strengthen our problem-solving ability and communication skills.
Q : Any unforgettable experiences?
A : The most unforgettable is whenever there's a challenge at work, everyone in the same level or the same team teams up and spends extra time to discuss and think of a solution, so that we can make suggestions to our superiors or clients later. The experience was interesting and fruitful.
In addition, in the second year after I joined the business, I was seconded to a Chinese bank to become their internal auditor. Being able to be in the clients' actual operation environment, I could understand the industry on site and provide the best solution. It is a win-win situation.
Q : How did you prepare for interview back then?
A : I searched for the latest interview question sets in online discussion forums and talked to my friends who were working in accounting firms and inquired about the internal environment and culture.
